1Password is a premium password manager with an excellent password generator built in. The individual plan starts at $2.99/mo (billed annually). Their standalone web generator at 1password.com/password-generator is free to use without an account. techtuate's generator is also free, also works without an account, and doesn't upsell anything.

Where 1Password genuinely wins - by a wide margin

1Password is a full password management product. The generator is one small feature of a much larger value proposition:

• End-to-end encrypted vault. 1Password stores every password, passphrase, credit card, and secure note in a vault encrypted with a Secret Key that never leaves your devices. Even 1Password cannot read your data.
• Two-factor Secret Key architecture. Beyond a master password, 1Password adds a device-specific Secret Key to the encryption. A stolen database is useless without it. This is a meaningfully stronger model than most competitors.
• Browser extension with auto-fill. The extension fills usernames and passwords on login pages. It is the feature that makes strong, unique passwords actually usable day-to-day. Without auto-fill, most people reuse passwords.
• Watchtower. 1Password monitors your stored passwords against breach databases, flags reused passwords, alerts you to weak passwords, and surfaces accounts that support two-factor authentication. It is a useful prompt to actually clean up your password hygiene over time.
• Travel Mode. Remove sensitive vaults from your devices before crossing borders, then restore remotely. Useful for journalists, lawyers, and frequent travelers.
• Passkey support. 1Password manages passkeys alongside passwords, positioning it well as the industry shifts away from passwords entirely.
• Polished apps on every platform. Native apps for macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, and browser extensions for all major browsers. The UX is consistently good.
• $2.99/mo is competitive. For a product that eliminates the cognitive load of managing dozens of unique passwords, $35.88/year is a reasonable price. Bitwarden has a more generous free tier, but 1Password's UX and feature set are top-tier.

The standalone web generator

1Password publishes a free password generator at their website that anyone can use without a subscription. It supports character class toggles, length control, and memorable word-based passwords (their "memorable" mode). It is a legitimately good tool.

The difference from techtuate is narrow on the generator alone:

• 1Password's standalone page is a marketing surface - it exists to introduce you to the product and show a subscription prompt.
• techtuate's generator shows no subscription prompt. There is nothing to sign up for.
• techtuate shows live entropy bits as you adjust settings, so you can see the strength impact of each decision.
• techtuate generates passphrases in the XKCD style (2048-word list, separator control). 1Password's "memorable" mode works differently.

Common situations where a standalone generator is all you need:

If you don't already use a password manager, the choice between 1Password and Bitwarden is the more important decision than which generator to use. 1Password is polished and worth the price; Bitwarden is excellent and free. Pick one.
